Our Vision

No woman should have to go through pregnancy, labour and birth on her own, yet many women seeking sanctuary are faced with this prospect. We envision a world where every woman has access to the resources she needs to feel healthy and empowered on the journey through pregnancy and into becoming a mother to a newborn baby.

The Birth Partner Project provides volunteer birth partners who work in small teams to offer support and friendship to asylum-seeking and refugee women in the latter stages of pregnancy, throughout labour and birth, and the first few weeks postnatally. We believe that…

Our Impact

The birth of a new baby is an incredibly important time, and the period before and after this life changing moment can be full of highs and lows. Research shows that women who lack access to a supportive network during this time are more likely to suffer from higher stress levels, encounter complications during labour and delivery, and experience mental health problems including postpartum depression. On the other hand, providing continuous care drastically improves outcomes for both mother and baby. Quite simply, the benefits of having support during pregnancy, labour, birth and into motherhood cannot be understated. Our volunteer birth partners have supported 68 women from the refugee and asylum-seeking community in Cardiff since the start of the project. With your help, we can increase our impact and continue to provide life-changing support to even more women. Read on to find out about the difference our volunteers have made so far.
